Nine Mile
Country Porno Electric Fireplace
By Jason Schneider

In spite of, or perhaps because of, the countless flip-flop wearin', acoustic guitar totin' dudes that regularly massacre Bob Marley's "One Love," reggae and folk rock have never been combined into something new that can stand on its own. Nine Mile's driving force, singer/guitarist D'Ari Pouyat, knows both worlds well and has made it his mission on his band's latest effort to completely erase any genre boundaries. On the whole, he succeeds effortlessly, incorporating pedal steel, banjo and upright piano into his plaintive songwriting ― the band take their name from Marley's birthplace ― with a homespun vibe holding everything together. Perhaps only in Canada could such a collision of styles make sense but Country Porno Electric Fireplace never draws attention to itself in that way. D'Ari's songs are honest and hopeful, which is all that's ultimately needed for this album to find the wide audience it deserves. (Dread Rock/Xiola/Universal)

As reticent as he can be, Ray LaMontagne has established himself over his previous three albums as one of the most compelling singer-songwriters in the world today. "Right now I am on a plane from Tokyo to London and I have no idea what day it is," says Jonathan Pierce, singer, songwriter and co-founder of the Drums. He and his band-mates have been forced to deal with a ridiculous level of demand as of late ― the kind of demand that fuels meltdowns, self-doubt and splits.... Read More
The cobra that's poised to attack on the front cover of The Budos Band III isn't just aesthetically cool; it's an apt metaphor for the Staten Island, NY-bred ten-piece thus far. The underrated Budos Band's tough, instrumental fusion of Afrobeat and vintage American funk and jazz (self-dubbed ... Full Review
