Moonbootica
...Save The Night!
By Miné Salkin

Hamburg DJs KoweSix and Tobitob (aka Moonbootica) are the perfect blend of hip-hop, electronic rhythms and self-destructive humour. The duo (named after their enormous, "moon-sized" boot feet) are known for mixing incredible dance tapes perfect for college parties and random dance events. Like the title suggests, the trick to happiness is to "save the night," or rather, don't waste your energy on the day. Quintessential Euro-trance meets humour with tracks such as "The Funk Out: Big Dick (The Bulgarian Got A Big Remix)," a Chromeo-meets-LMFAO disco variety number that matches the overall aesthetic of the double-CD. "Lemos: Tsalpatar" is surprisingly thoughtful, with an effervescent bass line and a strikingly sensual female vocal loop. For the music lover who also loves dancing around in outlandish outfits, this album is going to be their true party gem. As their website warns us: "It's like walking around with a gun in your pocket." (Moon Boutique)

Last year's most exhilarating subgenre alternated between the ridiculous names of "chillwave" and "glo-fi." Chaz Bundick, or Toro y Moi, may be the last of the bunch to have his say, but he has two reasons to be excited: Causers of This is the first of two albums he's prepared for 2010 and he... Whimsical curmudgeon Stephin Merritt is undeniably one of the most significant artists of the past 20 years. A clever wordsmith equally devoted to Human League and Cole Porter, Merritt's nascent musical explorations produced the lo-fi, synthesized sound of the Magnetic Fields. Even then, with his intellectual interest in diverse pop and folk instrumentation and the timeless art of charming, sentimental songs, glimmers of a contemporary pop genius shone through....
