Chinese Food
Toronto ON June 7 to 9

By Aaron Levy

Going on a whim for this band was definitely one of the best decisions of the fest. Walking into the set blind, they sound a lot like Wolf Parade on a basic level (vocally, melodically), except that I immediately like Chinese Food. Pulling off a vaguely recognisable cover of “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” doesn’t hurt either, and their chilled out peaks coupled with a keyboardist who invokes the gawkiest of awesome chromatic blues, and alternately rocks the sugar pop synths can definitely please a crowd. Not hard stuff to let slip into the background though.

The Hot Springs
Montreal’s Hot Springs proved to be the epitome of awesomeness in their Friday night performance at the Comfort Zone. Easily delivering the festival’s most impact and giving me a new favourite rock act, the band’s consummate showmanship and ferocious energy was unparalleled. With a ...Read More
Die Mannequin
Fronted by the bastard child of Joan Jett and Kurt Cobain, this raucous trio were clearly energised by a voluminous crowd. Singer/guitarist Care Failure belted out her metal-tinged rockers with reckless abandon and plenty of crowd contact, verbal and physical, as she constantly thrust her emaciated ...Read More
The Pinker Tones
Hailing form Barcelona, the Spanish Chemical Brothers (Los Hermanos Química?) augment their live sets with the addition of a third member. Like Edmonton’s Shout Out Out Out Out, these guys know how to thrown down a dance party of epic proportions. Their set features some original material and some r ...Read More

As is the case with any of the previous instalments in the Classic Albums series, Classic Albums: Paranoid is an hour-long investigation into what inspired, created and resulted from Black Sabbath's legendary 1970 sophomore opus. Breaking the album down into a track-by-track analysis a... Full Review
Like a thirsty man discovering an oasis, Markus Popp follows a decade-long silence with an overflow of sound: a two-CD/70-track reboot of his Oval project. It turns out to be a miniature epic though, with only 15 pieces cracking the two-minute mark. For these, Popp turns out prepared guitar and free... Full Review
There are many pleasant surprises on Eric Chenaux's latest album, Warm Weather with Ryan Driver, but the most striking is his use of a nylon-string guitar as his primary instrument for these achingly lovely songs.... Read More
