The Torrent
EP 07

By Pras Rajagopalan

Twitchy art school dance floor rock is the name of the game for the Torrent, and it’s a game they play rather well. Especially endearing is the knowing smirk with which this Toronto duo deliver their pulsing three-chord punk bursts. Lyrically, gratuitous name checking of cooler-than-thou icons abounds — Giorgio Moroder, Luis Bunuel and, um, Sonny and Cher — but I don’t think this bunch care much about lyrics, which is part of why this is such a fun listen. That the tunes are succinct and infectious definitely helps — the piercing synths of “Pairs,” for example, are sure to inspire many a bout of uncoordinated dance floor revelry. Still, it’s hard not to shake the feeling that these beats are a little neutered on record; I’m sure the Torrent are even more of a French-kissing good time live. (Independent)

High Places - High Places
The best music allows you to escape the tedium of everyday life. Brooklyn’s High Places insist that you lose yourself in theirs and they help the process by doing it in such inconceivable circumstances where every time you listen it’s a different kind of escape. Rob Barber and Mary Pearson utilize s ...Read More
Marnie Stern - This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That
New York guitar virtuoso Marnie Stern is a peculiar but charming singer-songwriter who matches a love of melody with some seriously advanced guitar playing. Imagine that Eddie Van Halen had a daughter with Deerhoof’s Satmoi Matsuzaki and they raised it on Don Caballero and Pinback, that’s the closes ...Read More
Mother Mother - O My Heart
O My Heart is a worthy name for Vancouver quintet Mother Mother’s second release. The follow-up to 2007’s Touch Up, this record takes the lyrical genius of the first, pushes it beyond all expectations and then pairs it with the band’s trademarked intertwining vocal harmonies. If that c ...Read More
Vivian Girls - Vivian Girls
It’s been a whirlwind year for Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls. Having formed in 2007 out of a number of bands the members were in, the Girls (Cassie Ramone, Kickball Katy and Frankie, who was recently replaced by Ali) began the routine of playing parties and releasing limited edition vinyl. Earlier this ye ...Read More

Crackdown 2 was pretty fun when I first played the demo. But before I got my thumbs on the final code, the G20 summit tore apart downtown Toronto — including an incursion of 300 riot cops into my neighbourhood to raid the protestors' Parkdale headquarters — and shook my faith in Canada's police services.... After a quick succession of albums on Tomlab in the first half of the '00s, Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong took a five-year break from recording to do family stuff and recharge. The Way Out shows no superficial changes in methodology: odd found speech samples and folksy acoustic instrumentatio... Full Review
Super Mario and Zelda may have gotten more attention, but for those who grew up on Nintendo's original NES console, ExciteBike was equally iconic. Racing a motocross over jumps was awesome — but the ability to create your own tracks, even without being saveable on such a p... Full Review
