Two Koreas
Main Plates & Classic Pies

By Vish Khanna

Mining the sounds of art-punks like Television and the Modern Lovers, the Two Koreas make some infectious noise on their scrappy debut. Collected live off the floor, Main Plates possesses a raw, direct feel that infuses the songs with that much more spirit. With vocalist Stuart Berman at the helm, the Koreas come off like Guided By Voices fronted by Jonathan Richman, which fills songs like “My Postman (Ist Rad)” and “54 is the New 27” with playful menace. In the end, the Toronto band play the way whip-smart New York City bohemians are supposed to and the guitars sound fucking amazing. (Independent)

Turbonegro - Party Animals
A lot has been said about Norwegian rock gods Turbonegro. Once they were one of the craziest bands going, with a hardcore denim-clad fan base unlike any other — and then came Hank Von Helvete’s drug problem and their four-year hiatus. When they returned, Turbonegro were the same crazy band, but with ...Read More
The Cribs - The New Fellas
Born out of a love for the American indie underground, Leeds, England’s the Cribs (brothers Ryan, Gary and Ross Jarman) came into consciousness with last year’s shambolic and unappreciated self-titled album that married Britain’s flair for pop hooks with lo-fi arrangements straight from the K Record ...Read More
John Vanderslice - Pixel Revolt
There comes a point in your life when, if you don’t change the way you’re doing things, circumstances force you to. For John Vanderslice it came with the dissolution of a difficult relationship, one which he candidly admits “kind of destroyed me.” Inconveniently, it also came in the middle of making ...Read More
Old Time Relijun - 2012
For those not familiar with their gospel, Old Time Relijun are a three-piece sect intent on moving your pelvis to their raw, dirty post-punk-meets-funk swagger and freeing your mind with flaming poetry overflowing with potently unconventional and unsavoury imagery. Lead singer Arrington de Dionyso p ...Read More
Sexsmith & Kerr - Destination Unknown
After nearly 20 years as musical partners, Ron Sexsmith and Don Kerr have finally released a proper collaboration with the startlingly fresh Destination Unknown. When Sexsmith completed his last album (Retriever), he ended up with a batch of songs that didn’t fit on the record. More introspective an ...Read More

In truth, the first spin of Burning Love's debut full-length didn't yield the anticipated reactions. Expecting something in the same raw, combative vein as their demo/EP, Songs For Burning Lovers, while still wonderfully rough, seemingly lacked its predecessors' overt rabidity and stampeding ... Hearing about someone else's dreams might be the most boring form of storytelling, but living in someone else's dreams ― at least in the hands of star writer/director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Night, Memento, The Prestige) ― makes for the movie event of the summer.... Full Review
Crackdown 2 was pretty fun when I first played the demo. But before I got my thumbs on the final code, the G20 summit tore apart downtown Toronto — including an incursion of 300 riot cops into my neighbourhood to raid the protestors' Parkdale headquarters — and shook my faith in Canada's police services....
