Iggy Pop
Beat 'Em Up

By Rob Ferraz

On the second song of this record, "L.O.S.T.," Iggy sings "I'm L.O.S.T., lost," and that seems to be an apt description of where he's at with Beat 'Em Up. The 15 songs herein run a baffling gamut of cheesy chugga chugga metal riffs to Danzig-style crooning. He takes aim at everyone, from music industry types in "Weasels" to phonies in "The Jerk." Age definitely hasn't mellowed him out, but this batch of songs is a bit of a mess. You'd think he would tip his hat to the fans of the Stooges instead of pandering to the nu metal crowd. And as much as his last record was knocked for the crooning, that would have been preferable to this. (Virgin)
