The Black Dahlia Murder
Deflorate

By Dave Synyard

American death metal masters Black Dahlia Murder can do no wrong. Since Miasma, their musical style and sound have been honed, progressed and perfected. Nocturnal was the point where they realized and focused their unrelenting musical energy, and Deflorate delivers similar to its predecessor but with more vehemence; their grimy, ghoulish vocals are matched idealistically to their decimating brutal thrash, while lethargic moments are paired with bottomless baritone vocals. Instantly "Black Valor" shreds with a bludgeoning sound that would make Dethklok jealous, while the rest of the album follows Nocturnal's sound closely, with machinegun snare work and double bassing at near-Agoraphobic Nosebleed speed. Furthermore, their guitar work is a hurricane of chugging riffing and soloing; it's almost too hard to focus on one musical aspect of the band without being distracted by the brilliance of another. Deflorate has the attributes to take BDM all the way to the top of the American death metal scene, and if this album doesn't cement their status worldwide it's likely nothing will. Deflorate is a behemoth from the new generation of death metal and one of the best releases of '09. (Metal Blade)

The first Uncharted was unheralded, an out-of-nowhere blast of awesome that finally let PS3 owners brag about the console's software, not just its hardware. Sure, its Indiana Jones-aping approach had previously been pixelated by Tomb Raider but Uncharted's art direction, ... Full Review
Commercial potential? The Avetts have it in spades, so don't be surprised if this disc blows up big. After building a grassroots following independently, the North Carolina trio signed to Rick Rubin's American label, and the man himself produced this, their fifth album. It's ready for primetime, as ... Full Review
Sitting in a Toronto coffee shop the week before the release of Little Girls' debut album, 20-year-old Josh McIntyre is a little worried. After an opening slot for crazed Israeli rockers Monotonix the previous night, the band's guitarist had his guitar amp repossessed. "He had it for a little longer than he was supposed to have it," he says dryly. A replacement needs to be wrangled before the band set out for their gig in Hamilton tonight.... Read More
