Drugs of Faith
2008 Demo

By Greg Pratt

Normally a three-song demo clocking in at five minutes wouldn't warrant much press but when you're Virginian grinders Drugs of Faith, it does. Opening cut "Race to the End" sounds like the best of Enemy Soil, a neglected grind band this group features ex-members of. "Anemic" rages like Agoraphobic Nosebleed covering Converge. "The Age of Reason" brings it all home with a hardcore-cum-grind rager with a bit of off-kilter melody and some sludge thrown in for good measure. Then, just like that, it's over. Awesome. Expect a full-length on Selfmadegod at some point. In the meantime, track down this quickie for a taste of what's to come. (Independent)

Mastodon - Crack The Skye
Evolving beyond the brutishness of their past, Atlanta, GA's Mastodon reveal their most accessible effort to date with seven-track, 50-minute opus Crack The Skye. While still the brainchild of four men channelling their Attention Deficit Disorder into grandiose metallic movements, as opposed ...Read More
Kylesa - Static Tensions
There's always been something rather rag-tag about Kylesa's sound. It could be the mixing together of sludge, crust, doom and punk; it might have been the always raw production. Maybe it was trying to cram two drummers into this already crowded sonic space. It's always been an enjoyable sound, one t ...Read More

Saturday night is meant for hand pumping and fraternal writhing, and nothing inspires it like Parisian pop. With an armoury of feel-good songs — almost all single-worthy — and a stellar warm-up act in Holy Fuck, French six-piece Phoenix played a joyous and infectiously amiable Sound Academy show.Full Review
One of this city’s superstar DJs, Misstress Barbara specializes in big beats for the masses, and with her three-piece band Girls on a Ducati, she’s extending her house pop chops to a more traditional live setting. With a guitar and mic, as well as keys and effects, she’s a capable front-woman but he... Full Review
The deliberately lo-fi, yet earnest, split between Transit and Man Overboard sounds like the product of a bunch of friends growing up on punk and hardcore throughout the '90s. The hardcore leanings of Boston fivesome Transit lay the groundwork for the pop punk tendencies of the Jersey kids in Man Ov... Full Review
