Scatterpopia

By Kevin Jones

Toronto turntable technicians iNSiDEaMiND have long been stretching the creative limits of hip-hop’s most consecrated music instrument with their moody, sample-based soundscapes and surgically spliced rhythms. With Scatterpopia, the didactic duo further expand upon their already impressive cinematic sensibilities, crafting a would-be film score to the exploration of a distant planet. Beginning with the cockpit chatter and subsequent landing of the cautious “Yellow, Orange & Red Lightning,” the record’s diverse sonic toolkit opens to reveal sounds as divergent as inquisitive flutes, echoed fazer scratches and splashing water before more conventional beats and grooves slowly seep into the fold. From there, stoic spoken word, dank, plodding rhythms and gritty horns are juxtaposed with the bristling drum & bass inflections of tunes like “Bright Side Bounce,” as the majority of the set is dedicated to overt experimentation. Though a certain lack of a few more animated highpoints becomes increasingly evident as the disc progresses, Scatterpopia is a definite mandatory late night listen that further reveals itself with each spin. Yo Majesty - Futuristically Speaking... Never Be Afraid
"For people to trust you and believe you, they have to see you a little bit. I'm not afraid to expose myself in that way," says Sara Quin, of sibling duo Tegan and Sara. The petite brunette has just led me into the heart of the east Vancouver jam space where she and her identical twin Tegan are rehearsing for upcoming tours. The room we're in is expansive, chilly and draped in darkness aside from a single strip of light in the middle of the room; she drags a sofa under the wimpy illumination and offers it to me, taking a straight-backed chair opposite for herself. "If we were a genre film," she continues, "we'd be a documentary."... Read More

Though they've never been predictable, twisting and turning down a veering path of whatever post-rock is supposed to be, Do Make Say Think strike a reflective tone on the wondrous Other Truths. By their own reckoning, Do Make's previous acclaimed record, You, You're a History in Rust, ... Full Review
