Young Rival
Young Rival

By Jill Langlois

Hailing from one of Canada’s handful of steel towns, Hamilton, ON’s Young Rival harbour sentiments of garage rock past on their self-titled EP. And it’s not surprising once you know that Emery Dobyns, who has worked with Lou Reed and Patti Smith, produced the six-song recording. Everything about Young Rival is short and punchy, from the titles to the chord progressions to the songs. Opener “Your Island” sounds like it belongs in the ’60s but manages to stay modern with its grunge rock hybrid riffs, and the psychedelic vibes of “4:15” make it sound like it should be called “4:20.” Pulling the best out of the past and mashing it up with the present isn’t an easy task but Young Rival do it and they do it well. This band sound worthy of the original Woodstock but could still find a place in the line-up if another incarnation of the festival cropped up today. (Independent)

High Places - High Places
The best music allows you to escape the tedium of everyday life. Brooklyn’s High Places insist that you lose yourself in theirs and they help the process by doing it in such inconceivable circumstances where every time you listen it’s a different kind of escape. Marnie Stern - This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That
New York guitar virtuoso Marnie Stern is a peculiar but charming singer-songwriter who matches a love of melody with some seriously advanced guitar playing. Imagine that Eddie Van Halen had a daughter with Deerhoof’s Satmoi Matsuzaki and they raised it on Don Caballero and Pinback, that’s the closes ...Read More
Mother Mother - O My Heart
O My Heart is a worthy name for Vancouver quintet Mother Mother’s second release. The follow-up to 2007’s Touch Up, this record takes the lyrical genius of the first, pushes it beyond all expectations and then pairs it with the band’s trademarked intertwining vocal harmonies. If that c ...Read More

Earlier this ye ...Read More

Saturday night is meant for hand pumping and fraternal writhing, and nothing inspires it like Parisian pop. With an armoury of feel-good songs — almost all single-worthy — and a stellar warm-up act in Holy Fuck, French six-piece Phoenix played a joyous and infectiously amiable Sound Academy show.Full Review
One of this city’s superstar DJs, Misstress Barbara specializes in big beats for the masses, and with her three-piece band Girls on a Ducati, she’s extending her house pop chops to a more traditional live setting. With a guitar and mic, as well as keys and effects, she’s a capable front-woman but he... Full Review
The deliberately lo-fi, yet earnest, split between Transit and Man Overboard sounds like the product of a bunch of friends growing up on punk and hardcore throughout the '90s. The hardcore leanings of Boston fivesome Transit lay the groundwork for the pop punk tendencies of the Jersey kids in Man Ov... Full Review
