Hey Colossus
Happy Birthday

By Keith Carman

On latest opus Happy Birthday, Hey Colossus become even more harried and spacey. Thankfully, the band’s out-there mentality comes across as more mad scientist than stoned hippy. The majority of Happy Birthday is static-infused chaos featuring pounding dirges that allude to the early days of hardcore but are far more comfortable wallowing in the murky soup of apocalyptic doom metal. Occasionally, subtle influxes of psychedelia creep in to create a mind-numbing experience akin to the more abrasive artistic elements of Sonic Youth, Can’s oddball leanings and Hawkwind’s experimental drive. Round all that out with Eyehategod’s relentless dirge and Melvins’ freakishness and Happy Birthday is equal parts entertaining and confusing. (Weewerk)

Intronaut - Prehistoricisms
Along with Mouth of the Architect and the Ocean, Los Angeles-based Intronaut are the best exponents of the post-core subgenre. Losing founding guitarist Leon Del Muerte might prove fatal for any other band but Intronaut bounce back with even more intelligent, tech-tinged prog metal, making Preh ...Read More
Black Ships - Omens
With Cursed gone (for now?) from our national hardcore scene, there’s a big, gaping hole where our love for crushingly heavy riffs and speedy breakdowns used to be. Black Ships, a group of dirty punks from Montreal, might be ready to fill that void, as Omens, their first full-length release ...Read More

In truth, the first spin of Burning Love's debut full-length didn't yield the anticipated reactions. Expecting something in the same raw, combative vein as their demo/EP, Songs For Burning Lovers, while still wonderfully rough, seemingly lacked its predecessors' overt rabidity and stampeding ... Hearing about someone else's dreams might be the most boring form of storytelling, but living in someone else's dreams ― at least in the hands of star writer/director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Night, Memento, The Prestige) ― makes for the movie event of the summer.... Full Review
Crackdown 2 was pretty fun when I first played the demo. But before I got my thumbs on the final code, the G20 summit tore apart downtown Toronto — including an incursion of 300 riot cops into my neighbourhood to raid the protestors' Parkdale headquarters — and shook my faith in Canada's police services....
