Antenne
#3

By Ashley Hampson

A founding member of Danish experimental noise rock band Grind and former half of industrial duo Institute for the Criminally Insane, Kim G. Hansen launched his solo career in 1999, creating Antenne, and is now on his third album, appropriately titled #3. Minimalist is a good word to describe the disc, though monotonous would work just as well. Each song is a mixture of simple strings, basic piano and moderate, scratchy synths with little variation in song structure. The sparse use of instrumentation gives #3 a gloomy vibe, disconsolate almost. Pop some Prozac because you’ll need it. It also doesn’t help that most of the tracks have fade ins and outs, some upwards of two minutes long, that sound suspiciously like bad radio frequencies. While there’s no doubt vocalist Marie-Louise Munck can sing, given the melancholic nature the songs take, her voice lacks intensity, some soul even. (Helmet Room)

Daft Punk have the helmets. Justice have the cross. And the Black Ghosts? Well, they have the skulls. And like any good symbol, it gives you a pretty clear idea of what’s in store on the UK duo’s long-awaited debut LP. Composed of former Simian crooner Simon Lord and the Wiseguys’ Theo Keating, the ...Read More

Although he's a Montreal native, this debut album sparkles with many of the magical elements associated with Vollebekk's Scandinavian heritage. Don't count on Norway's premier disco revivalist Hans-Peter Lindstrøm to ever turn in the same record twice. "All the artists and bands that I really like do surprising stuff every time, and I guess I just copy their way," he says from his Oslo home studio. "But it's also about not getting bored myself."...
