Mass Extinction
Creations Undoing

By Keith Carman

Hearing Exodus mainstay Gary Holt extol the virtues of Irish thrash metal outfit Mass Extinction isn’t exactly a revelation, as listening to four-song EP Creations Undoing is like unearthing pieces of Holt’s past, circa Bonded By Blood. In simple terms, Mass Extinction are a great Exodus cover band. That’s not exactly the worst thing to be called, since Creations Undoing has the same thrashy feel and aggressive approach that made some of thrash’s earliest albums instant classics. The wailin’ guitar solos of “Bodies for the Slaughter” and “Manipulating Evolution” invoke the spirits of air guitarists long gone and the band’s understanding of switching between half- and double-time beats is admirable. Overall though, there isn’t enough here to prove Mass Extinction are more than efficient pilferers of great metal moments. As is, they seem like a decent clone, the bargain version of something far more established. (Lugga)

Johnny Truant - No Tears For The Creatures
Hailing from the land of Mary Poppins, teatime and sweets, you’d think that some aspect of those niceties would have rubbed off on Johnny Truant and their crippling music. Fortunately, nothing of the sort has transpired, as No Tears For The Creatures leaves you with a hangover from a murky pu ...Read More
Opeth - Watershed
With 2008 proving to be a stellar year for great releases from veteran bands, no one album stands out so clearly from the pack as this, the newest offering by Sweden’s Opeth. It’s somewhat surprising to realise this is the band’s ninth album since 1995 (have they really been around that long?) and ...Read More

"I pretty much had a meltdown," Owen Pallett admits, laughing ruefully. "This record took a lot out of me." The 30-year-old violin genius didn't name his third full-length album Heartland for nothing. It's all blood, guts, emotion, and his own money that Pallett's poured into the epic, orchestral release, a project that was four years in the making, and according to some anxious and critical fans, long overdue....
