Piano Magic
Part Monster

By Michael Edwards

Piano Magic have been a troublesome band to follow because of their insistence on doing whatever they want. They’ve jumped from label to label like wandering nomads yet have managed to rack up an enviable number of singles and other releases during their ten-year existence. It seems like it took that decade for the band’s wealth of ideas to come together cohesively. Part Monster is the band’s biggest album to date for a few different reasons. First, it sounds like the band are trying to emulate some of their ’80s heroes that put so much stock in making epic music effortlessly, the kind capable of filling the largest of spaces. But it is the second reason that cements this as the pinnacle of the band’s discography: ambition. By building on themes from earlier records, Part Monster brings their lyrical exploration of Englishness to its natural conclusion. While in theory, that could be a chore, the resultant music is very compelling — like New York band My Favorite’s perfect recreation of ’80s electro pop, Piano Magic’s upbeat moments are hard to fault. The more atmospheric, slower moments act as punctuation and while not as immediately effective, they are still very much an integral part of this impressive album. (Important)

Immaculate Machine - Fables
The title of this band’s second album is quite inspired, as each of the songs, along with the cute album art, have a magical quality. Sounding reinvigorated and fresh, this is an unbelievably melodic and memorable album that will have indie rock/pop fans bouncing around the room. Maybe it was all th ...Read More
Brant Bjork & The Bros - Somera Sól
What do you mean, “Who’s Brant Bjork?” He’s only the original drummer in Kyuss, the godfathers of “stoner rock.” He also wrote some of their best songs. Best? Hell yeah, and heaviest — Guitar Magazine voted his riff for “Green Machine” one of the heaviest of all-time. After slumming for a few ...Read More
Datarock - Datarock Datarock

The Long Blondes - Someone to Drive You Home
Reality is overrated, according to the Long Blondes. From Sheffield, England, this two-boy/three-girl outfit are textbook outsiders who’d rather sit in their bedrooms dreaming about film star aspirations or hiding in the shadows of discos, creating dramas starring inebriated dance floor victims. Suc ...Read More
The Polyphonic Spree - The Fragile Army
Uh oh. It seems the cute little cult that was the Polyphonic Spree have decided to mobilise and organise. Soon they’ll have bubble blowing, rainbow striped tanks rumbling down Anytown, USA! Queens of the Stone Age - Era Vulgaris
Few bands can do consistency like Queens of the Stone Age. As far as critical accolades, impressive record sales, debauched tales and most importantly, tremendous records go, they’re an inimitable bunch. It’s no wonder they’re constantly name checked as the coolest rock band on the planet. While the ...Read More

The record is awash with the laidback rhythms of reggae — a welcome, breezy, tropical infusion and a beautiful reminder that c... Full Review
