Get Thrashed: The Story Of Thrash Metal
Directed by Rick Ernst

By Keith Carman

Trumping thrash fans is a tough endeavour, let alone accomplishment. Because the metallic sub-genre is so specific by means of definitive factors and temporal positioning in the scheme of heavy metal and music as whole, most proponents are diehards who pretty much know every finite aspect/trivial piece of information possible. However, with its intensely analytical approach, unearthed performance footage of rare and prominent bands, and interviews with the likes of Slayer, Metallica, Exodus, Anthrax and more, documentary Get Thrashed manages to offer something to even the most discerning rager. And if it isn’t in the film, it must be in the extra footage, a series of brief snippets featuring artists and historians praising prominent thrash acts divided up into their respective countries of origin. Flowing, edifying and inspiring, even those unconcerned with thrash should find this documentary on a brief but severe musical aberration an enthralling experience. (Lightyear)

Fantômas/Melvins Big Band - Live From London 2006
Confirming there’s no end to the weirdness of either Fantômas or Melvins, especially when mashed together in Frankenstein-esque fashion, Live From London 2006 is a masterful piece of insanity. Featuring tracks brutalized via improvisational tinkering by the likes of Mike Patton, Dave Lombardo ...Read More

Last year's most exhilarating subgenre alternated between the ridiculous names of "chillwave" and "glo-fi." Chaz Bundick, or Toro y Moi, may be the last of the bunch to have his say, but he has two reasons to be excited: Causers of This is the first of two albums he's prepared for 2010 and he... Whimsical curmudgeon Stephin Merritt is undeniably one of the most significant artists of the past 20 years. A clever wordsmith equally devoted to Human League and Cole Porter, Merritt's nascent musical explorations produced the lo-fi, synthesized sound of the Magnetic Fields. Even then, with his intellectual interest in diverse pop and folk instrumentation and the timeless art of charming, sentimental songs, glimmers of a contemporary pop genius shone through....
