Writing for Exclaim!

We love our writers but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage other adept and witty individuals to contribute to the magazine. If you’re interested in becoming part of the team (which involves a brief and terrifying initiation period filled with all sorts of bizarre hazing rituals) please feel free to email Editor in Chief James Keast at james@exclaim.ca. But please be sure to include the following:

1. A brief introduction explaining why you’d like to write for us and what you’re interested in writing (music/concert/film/DVD reviews, features, etc.).

2. Any history you have of writing — be it for a major publication, blog or even fanzine. Please also attach a sample of your writing, such as a record/concert review or any kind of feature article displaying your interviewing skills.

3. What your area of expertise is. We know people love “everything” and “all kinds of music,” but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have the understanding we’re looking for. If your specialty is Balkan gypsy music from Serbia or simply mainstream hip-hop and R&B, let us know. Maybe we’re in need of someone to write an appreciation piece on post-bop or rockabilly, so tell us what genres your descriptive talents work best with.

4. Patience. We can’t always get back to eager contributors immediately, so give us time. We’ll get back to you when we can.

Illustrating or Photographing for Exclaim!

We’re always on the lookout for an up and coming illustrator and the next great concert or studio photographer. If you are that person, we encourage you to submit a sample of your work or an online portfolio for James Keast to judge. I warn you though he’s a real stickler for talent. So if you can’t shoot a band in the right light at the most opportune moment or fail to capture the essence of a familiar face in a water colour beware. If you think you have what it takes, however, feel free to send an email stating your expertise, what you’re interested in contributing and a work sample or link to your online portfolio to james@exclaim.ca. Or if you have a postcard or print catalogue you’d like to share, please send to:
