Dean Wareham
Luna
By None None

Dean Wareham, of Luna, resides in New York City. The band is currently in the studio working on their next studio album. They recently released a live album, entitled "Luna Live" and will be playing Toronto and Montreal this summer.

Current fixations:
I’ve been on an Elvis Presley kick, reading Peter Guralnick’s bio of the King and listening to a lot of his ‘70s live recordings. And listening to the Saints compilation (the great Australian punk band).

Mind-altering work of art:
The films of Wong Kar-Wai.

Most memorable or inspirational gig and why?
I enjoyed seeing Pere Ubu live at the Paradise in Boston in 1981, perhaps because I was on mushrooms.

What has been your career high and low?
I’m on a career high all the time lately, am really enjoying performing live with Luna.
Career low: this generally involves an awful hotel somewhere in Switzerland.

What should everyone shut up about?
Aerosmith.

I would drop everything to play a benefit for:
Medical supplies for the children of Cuba.

What trait do you like and dislike most about yourself?
I like my hands (that’s a physical trait). I dislike my crankiness.

What would make you kick someone out of your band and/or bed, and have you?
Constant complaining.

When I think of Canada I think:
I always enjoy visiting Canada, except for the border crossing, where they often spend an inordinate amount of time looking for drugs, when Canada is in fact a "source" for drugs. I admire William Shatner, Canada’s greatest living actor.

What is your vital daily ritual?
Feeding my son.

How do you spoil yourself?
Buying socks.

What was your most memorable day job?
Working at "Italian Vogue" magazine.

If I wasn’t playing music I would be:
An anthropologist.

What is your greatest fear?
Loss of hearing.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?
The ability to write songs quickly.

What makes you want to take it off and get it on?
A beautiful woman.

Music and sex: Is there a difference? Why?
Both are beautiful, but they touch different parts of my body. If you can’t tell the difference, you’re weird.

Strangest brush with celebrity:
I had dinner with Leonardo DeCaprio and a cockatoo. It was "dope."

Who would be your ideal dinner guest, living or dead, and what would you
serve them?

I would love to have Elvis Presley for dinner, and serve him whatever he needed.

What does your mom wish you were doing instead?
My mother is quite happy with what I am doing.

Commercial potential? The Avetts have it in spades, so don't be surprised if this disc blows up big. Sitting in a Toronto coffee shop the week before the release of Little Girls' debut album, 20-year-old Josh McIntyre is a little worried. After an opening slot for crazed Israeli rockers Monotonix the previous night, the band's guitarist had his guitar amp repossessed. "He had it for a little longer than he was supposed to have it," he says dryly. A replacement needs to be wrangled before the band set out for their gig in Hamilton tonight.... Read More
