Rush's Neil Peart to Record New Version of “The Hockey Theme”
11/23/2009 By Josiah Hughes

Back in 2008, CBC Sports had a falling out with the author of the iconic Hockey Night in Canada theme over royalty issues. Before they could smooth it over, the song wound up in the hands of CTV and its TSN network, launching a national contest for a new HNIC theme. Many wondered what the folks at CTV would do with the song, and now, TSN have given word that they'll be recording a new version of the anthem.

Don't worry, they're not slicking it up with some new, lame version to appeal to the kids. Instead, they'll be looking to Rush drummer and Canadian icon Neil Peart to record a new version. In a press release from TSN, it was revealed that Peart has commissioned a custom set of hockey-themed drums from DW Drums to work with his version of the song.

“Having started out as a Canadian kid who skated on his ankles, and never made a hockey team, it is particularly sweet to be invited to be a part of this national institution — if not on skates, then on drums, performing Canada's 'second national anthem,'” Peart said in the same release. “At last I've made the big leagues!"

While no release date for the song has been set, it will be used for the remainder of TSN's coverage of the NHL season.

In addition to Peart’s redo, others artists who have recorded reinterpretations of the iconic song include Simple Plan and the Barenaked Ladies.

"I pretty much had a meltdown," Owen Pallett admits, laughing ruefully. "This record took a lot out of me." The 30-year-old violin genius didn't name his third full-length album Heartland for nothing. It's all blood, guts, emotion, and his own money that Pallett's poured into the epic, orchestral release, a project that was four years in the making, and according to some anxious and critical fans, long overdue....
