Peter Gabriel Gets “Radical,” Covers Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Neil Young And More On New Album

As a member of Genesis and later a solo artist, Peter Gabriel has never achieved the pop superstardom that former band-mate Phil Collins did. Instead, Gabriel has made a name for his outsider approach to art, dabbling in world and experimental music. Now, he’s announced he’ll continue his exploratory approach to music-making with a new album of covers.

According to a report from BBC 6 Music [via NME], Gabriel will be fronting some orchestral versions of beloved songs on a new album called Scratch My Back. The album also shows Gabriel’s impeccable taste, with covers of Radiohead, Magnetic Fields, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Lou Reed and Neil Young allegedly attached. John Metcalfe, a collaborator on the album, told BBC 6 Music that the album would be more complex than it sounds. “The songs are not simply covers,” he said. “They are major reinterpretations of some famous stuff. It’s quite radical.”

Scratch My Back isn’t expected in stores until the spring of 2010, but we have found a list of songs rumoured to be appearing on the album, which you can peruse below.
