Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor Launches Record Label, Unearths Previously Unreleased Arthur Russell Track for First Release

When he’s not impressing Jay-Z or collaborating with Michael McDonald as a member of Grizzly Bear, Chris Taylor will now be operating his own record label. Called Terrible Records, the first releases from the label will instantly render its name untrue.

On October 13, the label will mark its inaugural release with a seven-inch, which, like all releases on the label, will have been produced by Taylor at his Terrible Studios (where Grizzly Bear recorded their Veckatimest LP). The record will have Taylor’s first solo recording on the A-side under his new moniker CANT, with an unreleased Arthur Russell joint on the B-side.

The Russell song is “Come to Life,” a folk track that the legendary leftfield composer wrote and recorded in the late ’70s. The track was supposed to come out on last year’s Russell compilation Love Is Overtaking Me, which Taylor mixed, restored and edited, but the song never made the final cut.

This seven-inch is limited to 1,000 copies, so pay close attention to the Terrible site if you want to land one. At this point, however, the site is still under construction.

Following the CANT/Arthur Russell split, Terrible will drop All of the Fire, the debut EP from New York’s Acrylics, on October 28. The record, available on ten-inch vinyl, was again produced by Taylor.
