Neil Young Heading to TIFF
8/12/2009 By Jessica Carroll

Canadian rock legend Neil Young is at it again. In addition to the recent announcement that he will be honoured as 2010’s MusiCares Person of the Year for his work with children’s charities, Young will make an appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival in support of his role in a concert doc by director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Stop Making Sense, Rachel Getting Married). The film, entitled The Neil Young Trunk Show debuted this past March at Austin’s SXSW festival and documents one of Young’s 2007 shows in Upper Darby, PA.

Young will be joined at TIFF by fellow music legend and documentary subject Joan Baez, whose film American Masters: Joan Baez will be screening just days after Demme’s Neil Young Trunk Show.

According to the Toronto Star, TIFF co-director Cameron Bailey says that although their appearances at the screenings may be brief, Young and Baez will “probably bring guitars.”

TIFF is being good to music fans this year, screening both the Young and Baez flicks for free at Yonge-Dundas Square, along with other classic music docs like the Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense, U2’s Rattle & Hum, I’m Your Man with Leonard Cohen and the Band’s classic The Last Waltz. On top of this, the White Stripes’ Canadian tour doc The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights is also do to screen at the festival

The Canadian Music Cafe will also run during the festival, from September 15 to 17, at Dundas Square’s Hard Rock Café and will feature live shows by Arkells, Spiral Beach, Amy Millan and Hawksley Workman, among others.

TIFF will be held this year from September 10 to 19.
