Vinyl Sales Already Up 50 Percent from Last Year, Set to Reach 2.8 Million Units Sold in 2009

At this point it’s no big secret vinyl is going through a resurgence. In fact, by now everyone’s probably sick of hearing about it. Nevertheless, we couldn’t help ourselves on this one and report that vinyl sales are set to hit a new benchmark in 2009, with sales going up a hefty 50 percent during the first five months of the year.

The numbers come from the usual music sales stats authority, Nielsen SoundScan [via the L.A. Times/Daily Swarm], which reports that vinyl sales have already topped 1 million in 2009, while at this time last year sales were at 701,000 units. SoundScan also perdicts vinyl sales will reach 2.8 million units this year, up from 1.9 million in 2008.

Sill, big vinyl numbers or not, the sales still only make up for less than one percent of overall album sales, with 121.8 million CDs being sold so far this year, versus 33.2 million digital albums. Also, the rate of growth is definitely slowing: vinyl sales were up 90 percent in 2008 over 2007, making that 50 percent seem a bit small.

All in all, though, the news should please at least a few cranky record store owners.
