I Am Robot and Proud, Gentleman Reg and More to Pay Live Tribute to Royal City
6/8/2009 By Denise Falzon

In honour of the upcoming B-sides/rarities comp Royal City 1999-2004, two tribute shows have been organized in southern Ontario to celebrate the much loved and much missed Royal City.

Dubbed “Burning Torch: A Tribute to Royal City,” the concerts will take place on June 24 in Guelph at the city’s Ebar and June 26 in Toronto at Tranzac, with players like Gentleman Reg, I Am Robot and Proud, Noah23 and Nathan Lawr performing their favourite Royal City tunes.

Copies of Royal City 1999-2004 will be sold at each show and some proceeds will benefit Out on the Shelf, Guelph’s queer library and resource centre, as well as the Tranzac and the Toronto Cat Rescue.

To refresh you memories, Royal City was formed by Aaron Riches in 1999 in Guelph, and went on to release three full-lengths before calling it a day: 2000’s At Rush Hour the Cars, 2001’s Alone at the Microphone and 2004’s Little Heart’s Ease. They also spent some of their days collaborating with such artists as Feist, Orange Juice’s Edwyn Collins, Sufjan Stevens and Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy.

As previously reported, Royal City 1999-2004 features 12 tracks, most of which have yet to see the light of day and will be released in Canada on June 23 via Outside and elsewhere by Asthmatic Kitty.

While there's no doubt many in the music industry are still struggling to recover from that wicked roundhouse to the head dealt ten years ago by Napster and the dawn of file-sharing, this year's Transmission music conference, recently held in Victoria, felt somehow lacking in the coherence of purpose that made last year's conference such a success. More troubling, though, was the continued absence of input from two rather significant players in the music business: musicians and consumers.... Read More
