Caribou Announces Tour, Unveils the Caribou Vibration Ensemble
5/12/2009 By Josiah Hughes

Hard at work on his follow-up to 2007’s acclaimed Andorra, psychedelic beatsmith Dan Snaith will finally be reviving his Caribou alias for a gaggle of tour dates this summer and fall, including a number of European shows.

As you’ll see below, there’s only one Canadian date but my gosh is it a doozy. On September 9, Snaith will be joined by a group of musicians known as the Caribou Vibration Ensemble. The group includes such notable musicians as Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden, Koushik, John Schmersal, Kathryn Bint and Ahmed Gallab, along with a choir, a horn section and a quartet of drummers. In other words, don’t sleep on it. If you do, however, the same line-up will perform in Monticello, NY, for All Tomorrow’s Parties on September 13.

Caribou tour dates:

5/15 London, England - Corsica Studios (DJ set)
5/30 London, England - Barbican (DJ set)
6/5 London, England - The Arches (DJ set)
6/13 Athens, Greece - Technopolis (DJ set)
7/18 Grafenhainichen, Germany - Ferropolis
7/19 Dour, Belgium - Dour Festival
7/20 Nijmegen, Netherlands - Saddlespan Valkhof Park (De Affaire Festival Nijmegen)
7/21 Milan, Italy - Parklife Festival
7/25 Huntingdon, England - Secret Garden Party
7/26 Birmingham, England - Supersonic Festival
9/10 Toronto, ON - The Opera House*
9/13 Monticello, NY - Kutshers Country Club (All Tomorrow's Parties)*
* as the Caribou Vibration Ensemble

Last year's most exhilarating subgenre alternated between the ridiculous names of "chillwave" and "glo-fi." Whimsical curmudgeon Stephin Merritt is undeniably one of the most significant artists of the past 20 years. A clever wordsmith equally devoted to Human League and Cole Porter, Merritt's nascent musical explorations produced the lo-fi, synthesized sound of the Magnetic Fields. Even then, with his intellectual interest in diverse pop and folk instrumentation and the timeless art of charming, sentimental songs, glimmers of a contemporary pop genius shone through....
