Brian Borcherdt Steps Away From Holy Fuck For New Solo Album
9/25/2008 By Brock Thiessen

Perhaps in an attempt to take a break from all the weirdness of Holy Fuck, the band’s founder Brian Borcherdt has announced he’s branching out for a little solo excursion. On October 7, Hand Drawn Dracula will release Borcherdt’s Coyotes, a stripped-down solo effort that finds the Toronto-based songwriter getting back to basics, and the guitar.

Recorded by long-time friend Jose Contreras of By Divine Right, Coyotes was recently put to tape during one of Holy Fuck’s tour breaks in a living room turned recording space. The album contains little more than guitar and vocals, and as Borcherdt explains, it comes as a way to get back into his old “method of protest.”

“I just wanted to write. That's all I want to do still,” Borcherdt says in his one-sheet. “Now I have a band called Holy Fuck, which keeps me busy as hell. The only problem is that Holy Fuck doesn't have guitar in it, at all. So as you can imagine, I miss my guitar and writing sad songs.

“Last year, while taking a brief break from the road, a friend of mine recorded seven of my recently written songs. For the most part, we kept the first takes and did little else to them, leaving them bare with no drums, no bass, etc., just me and my guitar. It was nice."

In support of the record, Borcherdt has also announced he will be hitting the road and travelling across the country with fellow Canadian folkie Martha Wainwright. Here are Borcherdt’s tour dates, as well as the Coyotes tracklisting:

Coyotes:
1. “While I Was Asleep”

Aside from deliberately misspelling their entire lyric book, there's nothing I dislike about Capade's Dno't Say It Mihgt Maen Somehitng. Though recently implying that he's tapped out musically, Sufjan Stevens has never created something as pointedly ambitious as The BQE. Originally commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music for a 2007 performance, as a take-home release The BQE consists of an uncompromising essay ostensibly all about the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, a visually stunning film, a stirring orchestral soundtrack, a stereoscopic View-Master reel, and, in limited edition, a 40-page comic book about characters known as the Hooper Heroes....
