Check Out Fresh Reviews of Neon Indian, the Jesus Lizard, Dinosaur Jr. and More in Exclaim!’s Concert Round-Up
11/18/2009 By Bryan Walker

Sometimes there can be onslaughts of amazing concerts happening within sort spans of time, and it can be downright daunting to decide which shows to make it out to. Fortunately, Exclaim! is here to cover anything you may have missed, or to help let you compare your thoughts on the shows you did catch. Check out some of our recent concert reviews below.

Up for grabs, we first have the Jesus Lizard hitting Toronto recently with Guelph/Toronto residents Brides for a huge show at the Phoenix. It was the Jesus Lizard’s first concert in the city in ten years, and we liked it so much, we slapped on our Mark of Excellence.

Another big show featuring a pairing of long-standing greats with some great Canadian acts was J Mascis's Dinosaur Jr. show with Vancouver-based Pink Mountaintops, the side-project of Black Mountain's Stephen McBean. And not to let McBean steal all the spotlight, another Black Mountain side project, Jeremy Schmidt's Sinoia Caves joined San Fransico's Jonas Reinhardt and Portland's Valet for a synth-filled night at the cozy Little Mountain Studios in Vancouver.

We also have California-based Cryptacize joining the stage with brother-sister duo the Fiery Furnaces at the El Mocambo in Toronto, while a bit further east, Detroit’s minimalist virtuoso Deastro joined UK pop man Max Tundra at Club Lambi in Montreal.

And last but not least, our brave contributors braved Vancouver’s coldest, rainiest and most downright miserable night of the year so far to catch the only Canadian date by Neon Indian, Alan Palomo’s fast-rising lo-fi synth pop project and best of 2009 shoe-in.

The deliberately lo-fi, yet earnest, split between Transit and Man Overboard sounds like the product of a bunch of friends growing up on punk and hardcore throughout the '90s. The hardcore leanings of Boston fivesome Transit lay the groundwork for the pop punk tendencies of the Jersey kids in Man Ov... Full Review
Crazy Heart, in which Jeff Bridges adds another career achievement notch on his belt as a down-to-his-last-drink country singer, might be more difficult to watch for musicians than for average moviegoers.

Bad Blake (Bridges), who's on the wrong side of 50, is hauling his truck ... Full Review
The term "videogame music" is often intended as an insult, deriding electronic beatscapes as rudimentary by comparing them to the 8-bit by necessity, bleep-based soundtracks of early Atari and Nintendo games. (See: Castles, Crystal) That Super Mario's theme music remains embedded in the frontal lobes of anyone under the age of 40 proves the critical weakness of the diss ― but it's also hopelessly archaic considering how much videogame music has evolved over the years....
