M.I.A. Working on Third Album That Will Sound Like “Gucci Mane Meets Animal Collective,” Says Diplo
11/6/2009 By Josiah Hughes

It still makes us chuckle to think that last year, Sri Lankan rapper M.I.A. announced her retirement. Soon after, she joined Jay-Z, T.I. and Kanye to rap at the Grammys. And now, there are mumblings of a new album, her third, dropping in 2010.

In a recent interview with Pedestrian.tv [via TwentyFourBit], bass-addicted producer Diplo mentioned that he's “been in the studio with M.I.A. working on her new record.” Not only that, but he revealed that the album will sound pretty incredible. “It’s like Gucci Mane meets Animal Collective,” Diplo said. “I think there are a couple of people [producing] but we’re going to finish it off, me and Switch. We’ve done like four tracks already.”

Gucci Mane, for the unfamiliar, is the Atlanta-based T.I. associate who spent most of last year in prison thanks to community service violation. His new album, The State vs. Radric Davis, is dropping in December. The thought of him rapping over Animal Collective atmospherics makes us giddy with joy, so hopefully Diplo's M.I.A. work can meet that same level of excitement.

Sitting in a Toronto coffee shop the week before the release of Little Girls' debut album, 20-year-old Josh McIntyre is a little worried. After an opening slot for crazed Israeli rockers Monotonix the previous night, the band's guitarist had his guitar amp repossessed. "He had it for a little longer than he was supposed to have it," he says dryly. A replacement needs to be wrangled before the band set out for their gig in Hamilton tonight.... Read More
