Lily Allen Launches Record Label After “Retiring”

In case you missed it, Lily Allen recently wrote in her NME blog that she would be retiring as a musician. “Just so you know, I have not renegotiated my record contract and have no plans to make another record,” she wrote. “I do however remain a fan of new music, so this is not some selfish crusade.”

Allen's spokesperson later clarified that she didn't mean to say that she was retiring, but instead that she was looking for ways to improve the industry. Now, it's been revealed that she'll do so by starting her own record label.

In an interview with the Telegraph [via Consequence of Sound], Allen said, “I’m setting up a record label at the moment, getting involved in lots of different things. I think things need to change in the music industry and we need to rethink a lot of stuff.”

She also confirmed her hiatus, saying that the time off would be used to launch the label. “I’m definitely taking a break. I’ve been on the road for nearly five years so I’m tired and I need a break,” Allen said, adding, “I might be doing [a] play, it isn’t confirmed yet. I’m just keeping all my options open.”

While it's perhaps not the best time to start a record label, if Allen makes the right choices, her celebrity endorsement should be enough to move at least some units.
