Elvis Costello Kicks Off Live Album Series with Reissue of 1978 Toronto Show
8/24/2009 By Jason Schreurs

One of the most infamous late ‘70s punk/new wave bootlegs is getting a proper release this fall when Elvis Costello’s Live at the El Mocambo will finally see a official release via Hip-O/UMe.

The live recording of a March 6, 1978 show in Toronto, ON has become legendary for the amount of times it’s been bootlegged. And while the live recording was included as a bonus disc in the 1993 Costello box set that collected his first three landmark albums, until now it’s never seen wide release.

The El Mocambo live show, which includes songs from Costello’s albums My Aim Is True and This Year's Model, is the first instalment in a series of live Costello albums that will be released in the next year. The series is titled The Costello Show.

In other Costello news, the first season of his Sundance Channel music/talk show Spectacle is now available on DVD.

Here is the tracklisting for Live at the El Mocambo, which is due out September 29:

1. "Mystery Dance"
2. "Waiting for the End of the World"
3. "Welcome to the Working Week"
4. "Less Than Zero"
5. "The Beat"
6. "Lip Service"
7. "(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea"
8. "Little Triggers"
9. "Radio Radio"
10. "Lipstick Vogue"
11. "Watching the Detectives"
12. "Miracle Man/Band Introduction"

The deliberately lo-fi, yet earnest, split between Transit and Man Overboard sounds like the product of a bunch of friends growing up on punk and hardcore throughout the '90s.
