Buraka Som Sistema Announce North American Tour
3/2/2009 By Brock Thiessen

With a reputation for making crowds “dance like hell, sweat like hell and scream like hell,” we’ve always suspected Buraka Som Sistema shows pack a hefty punch but come spring, we’ll know for sure. Yep, the Portuguese kuduro outfit are making the trek to North America, where the grimey, movement-inspiring trio will play a series of live shows in both the U.S. and Canada.

Unlike the band’s last North American trip, this time Buraka Som Sistema will come packing a “full live set-up” and, better yet, an "explosive, multi-decked live show involving physics-defying dance troupes, serious percussion and rotating rapid-fire MCs." As previously reported, the group will also have domestic copies of their hotly tipped Black Diamond LP, which is due out April 7 via Fabric. As you may remember from 2008, that album features the single "Sound of Kuduro," a track that features M.I.A., and lit up more than just a few year-end best-of lists.

And if you’re still confused on what this whole kuduro thing is, ol’ Wikipedia describes it thusly: "house music with programming inspired by traditional carnival music from the Caribbean and Angola."

Here are all Buraka Som Sistema tour stops:

4/17 Indio, CA - Coachella
4/21 San Francisco, CA - Rickshaw Stop
4/23 Portland, OR - Rotture
4/24 Vancouver, BC - Biltmore Cabaret
4/25 Seattle, WA - Nectar Lounge
4/28 Chicago, IL - Sonotheque
4/29 Toronto, ON - El Mocambo
4/30 Montreal, QC - Zoobizarre
5/1 Boston, MA - Harper's Ferry
5/2 New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom

If you've ever wondered why Toronto's first wave punk scene lacks the oral histories, band biographies, and memoirs pouring out of similar scenes, Treat Me Like Dirt is for you — as evidenced by a first printing selling out a week before its release. "I didn't know that any of this had happened the way I knew that New York and London had these great punk movements," says author Liz Worth.... Read More
