Patrick Watson Announces New Album
2/26/2009 By Brock Thiessen

Orch-pop maestro Patrick Watson has announced his follow-up to his Polaris Prize-winning Close to Paradise is in the bag and ready for public consumption. Its been dubbed Wooden Arms and has the due date of April 28 on Secret City Records.

The Montreal native self-produced this one and wrote the album’s 11 new tracks in a few short months at the the tail end of 2008. The press release tells us that in many ways the new record is the story and sound waking up in strange places all around the world, with Wooden Arms dishing out a “stripped-down rejuvenation” and allowing “Watson's voice and orchestrations shine brighter against a rhythmic percussive foundation that has been brought to the forefront.”

No tracklisting has been revealed yet for Wooden Arms, but the album does include the songs "Beijing," "Big Bird in a Small Cage," "Fireweed," "Machinery of the Heavens," "Man Like You," "Tracy's Waters," "Traveling Salesman," "Hommage," "Down at the Beach" and the title track.

Watson will be embarking on full-fledged Canadian tour in support of the record, but the dates have yet to be announced, so stay tuned.

In the middle of an open field, you can hear music from everywhere, particularly the DJ stage situated in the centre. Almost 200 bands have gathered here to play on seven stages, each only about 100 metres from the next, causing sound to bleed all over. For veteran music fans, it's a familiar scene: scantily clad women offer Red Bull and vodka, dreadlocked white hippies entrance themselves with their spin-dancing, and if you don't like a given band, more options are only an aimless wander away.... In truth, the first spin of Burning Love's debut full-length didn't yield the anticipated reactions. Expecting something in the same raw, combative vein as their demo/EP, Songs For Burning Lovers, while still wonderfully rough, seemingly lacked its predecessors' overt rabidity and stampeding ...
