Joy Division's Stephen Morris Speaks Up About Ian Curtis Grave Robbery

As we reported yesterday, the gravestone of late Joy Division singer Ian Curtis was stolen from a cemetery in Macclesfield, England. Now his former band-mate, Stephen Morris, has gone public and derided the foolish move.

Speaking with NME.com, Morris, also of New Order, said, "I'm speechless. It really is not a very nice thing at all... I just don't understand why anyone would do it. You couldn't sell it on eBay - it's ridiculous and very upsetting."

Morris noted that since Joy Division's recent rise in fame thanks to last year's successful biopic and documentary, Control and Joy Division, respectively, it could be a desperate cashgrab. "There had been the [Joy Division] films (the 2007 'Control' movie and the recent eponymous documentary) so maybe someone thought they could cash in… or maybe it's someone who is a bit deranged - you'd have to be."

He ended by pleading to the thief to "have a bit of dignity about it" and anonymously turn in the gravestone.
