Arcade Fire Writing Soundtrack for new Richard Kelly Film

Broken Social Scene are no longer Canada's only art-rock ensemble to be tapped for film scoring duties. Our country's most recognizable (non-embarrassing) musical export, the Arcade Fire is reportedly working on the soundtrack for Donnie Darko writer/director Richard Kelly's next film. No, it's not his follow up to Donnie Darko, though a lack of awareness of the existence of Kelly's second feature, Southland Tales is understandable. The movie in question is Kelly's third, titled The Box, starring Cameron Diaz and James "Make-my-cheque-out-to-my-cheekbones" Marsden and based on a Twilight Zone episode written by Richard Matheson, author of I Am Legend.

A posting on Kelly's MySpace page reads: "We're starting to work with a very famous band who is honoring us with being the first filmmakers they've ever scored a film with. Hopefully there will be an announcement soon about who it is!"

So how do we know this "very famous band" is the Arcade Fire? Suffice to say, you don't want Markus Dravs planning any surprise parties for you. On his website, the producer/engineer, who's worked with Björk, Coldplay and Brian Eno among others, listed he's "Now off to Canada to work with Arcade Fire on a soundtrack for the forthcoming Richard Kelly film." Looks like Dravs realised he was getting a little loose-lipped in the secrecy department and has since removed the posting.

The cat's out of the bag now anyway though and hopefully the Arcade Fire's participation will mean that The Box won't be swept into the void of "too damn weird to promote" along with Southland Tales. And for the record, Richard Kelly would like you to know that he has "absolutely no involvement" with the Donnie Darko sequel that is currently being discussed.
