Fucked Up's Pink Eyes Hospitalised After Sled Island Gig
6/30/2008 By Josiah Hughes

When you go see Toronto juggernauts and recent Matador signees Fucked Up in concert, you are pretty much guaranteed to see some amazing hardcore and vocalist Damien “Pink Eyes” Abraham shirtless and bleeding from the forehead. Friday night’s Fucked Up set at Vern’s in Calgary, however, brought even more drama when Abraham shattered a beer glass into his head.

Upon finishing the set, he was rushed to the hospital where he received stitches for his wound. Though this was the first of three scheduled performances at the Sled Island Festival, the band played as normal the next night. “I had to miss all of the bands I wanted to see, because I was sleeping in the hospital like a baby,” Damien told the beyond-capacity crowd at the Legion on Saturday night.

Hopefully he will heal to bleed again on the band’s upcoming European tour. The Chemistry of Common Life, the band’s Matador debut, will be out in the fall.

If you've ever wondered why Toronto's first wave punk scene lacks the oral histories, band biographies, and memoirs pouring out of similar scenes, Treat Me Like Dirt is for you — as evidenced by a first printing selling out a week before its release. "I didn't know that any of this had happened the way I knew that New York and London had these great punk movements," says author Liz Worth.... Read More
