Stephen Malkmus Provides "Goodies" For Record Store Day
3/11/2008 By Brock Thiessen

As we previously reported, April 19 will mark Record Store Day, a celebration of old-fashioned record shopping and in-the-flesh music snobbery. In our report, we subtly poked fun at a so-called “goodie bag,” which participating stores would be passing out to customers. Well, it looks like perhaps organisers read our words and have actually deemed the term “goody” appropriate.

Apparently, Mr. Slanted Enchanted himself, Stephen Malkmus, will be donating a semi-exclusive release to the event: a limited-edition ten-inch featuring a trio of unreleased jams. Participating retailers will have the item up for grabs on the day of the event, which will likely come with a small price tag. But hey, dishing out a bit of support, green or not, is what this Record Store Day is about.

Here’s what the Boss, aka Bruce Springsteen, has to say about the event: “I buy CDs all the time. I’ll go into a record store and just buy $500 worth of CDs. I will! I am single-handedly supporting what's left of the record business. I hate to see record stores disappear, and I’m old-school in that I think you should pay for your music. But what my kids do is download a lot of things, pay for them, and then if they love something, they'll get the CD. That may be the future.” ($500 at a time?! Don’t rub it in our faces, Bruce.)

The Malkmus ten-inch comes in the form of a single for “Cold Son,” which is also included on the recently released Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks’ jam album, Real Emotional Trash. The “Cold Son” ten -inch will also be available during Malkmus’ massive string of tour dates, Vancouver stop included. Sorry Toronto and Montreal. (Prairies, the North and Atlantic Canada, you should sadly be used to this kind of thing by now.)

“Cold Son” Record Store Day ten-inch:
1 Cold Son
2 Walk Into the Mirror
3 Pennywhistle Thunder
4 Carl the Clod

Last year's most exhilarating subgenre alternated between the ridiculous names of "chillwave" and "glo-fi." Chaz Bundick, or Toro y Moi, may be the last of the bunch to have his say, but he has two reasons to be excited: Causers of This is the first of two albums he's prepared for 2010 and he... Whimsical curmudgeon Stephin Merritt is undeniably one of the most significant artists of the past 20 years. A clever wordsmith equally devoted to Human League and Cole Porter, Merritt's nascent musical explorations produced the lo-fi, synthesized sound of the Magnetic Fields. Even then, with his intellectual interest in diverse pop and folk instrumentation and the timeless art of charming, sentimental songs, glimmers of a contemporary pop genius shone through....
