Deerhunter Gear Up For Busy Fall
8/7/2008 By Brock Thiessen

As Deerhunter wait until Halloween to drop their upcoming Microcastle, the art-rockin’ Georgians have lined up quite the string of fall tour dates. Starting with a hometown show in Atlanta, the band will be trekking across North America until December, making stops in Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto along the way.

Deerhunter are also bringing along some impressive tour support this time out. On various dates, Pylon, BARR and Vivian Girls are set to open for Deerhunter, while the much-loved lo-fi kids of Times New Viking will be the group’s constant companion throughout the tour, making all the dates a nice package deal.

As we previously reported, Microcastle is set to drop October 28 via Kranky in North America and on 4AD everywhere else. The band’s sophomore effort will also be preceded by a limited edition seven-inch, which includes the tracks “Nothing Ever Happened” and “Neither of Us, Uncertainly.”

The deliberately lo-fi, yet earnest, split between Transit and Man Overboard sounds like the product of a bunch of friends growing up on punk and hardcore throughout the '90s. The hardcore leanings of Boston fivesome Transit lay the groundwork for the pop punk tendencies of the Jersey kids in Man Ov... Full Review

The term "videogame music" is often intended as an insult, deriding electronic beatscapes as rudimentary by comparing them to the 8-bit by necessity, bleep-based soundtracks of early Atari and Nintendo games. (See: Castles, Crystal) That Super Mario's theme music remains embedded in the frontal lobes of anyone under the age of 40 proves the critical weakness of the diss ― but it's also hopelessly archaic considering how much videogame music has evolved over the years....
